As a young Black woman, Sonya Massey was and still should be cherished as a friend, mother, and daughter. Sonya called the police because she thought there could have been an intruder.
Regardless of our identity or place of residence, all Americans ought to be able to request help without fear of losing their lives.
The fact that Sonya was killed by a responding officer should serve as a reminder that Black Americans—more than most of us—frequently worry about their safety.

I commend the Springfield State’s Attorney’s office for their swift action. While we wait for the situation to be investigated, let’s pray for comfort for the grieving.
