After the Heritage USA Christian theme park in South Carolina collapsed and several other issues, including sexual misbehavior and financial fraud, Jim was forced to quit PTL Ministries in 1987. He was ultimately found guilty of selling “lifetime memberships” for $1,000 apiece to duplicitous customers while promising them a three-night stay at Heritage USA’s opulent hotel in exchange.
Eight counts of mail fraud, fifteen counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy were brought against Jim. He received a 45-year term in federal prison and a $500k fine after being found guilty on all 24 counts.
After serving five years of his original eight-year term in jail, Jim was eventually granted his parole. He owes the IRS close to $4 million. In 1992, Jim and Tammy Faye announced their separation.

Personal Life
Raleigh Bakker and Furnia Lynette “Furn” Irwin, the parents of James Orsen Bakker, gave birth to him in Muskegon, Michigan. Bakker attended North Central University, an Assemblies of God-affiliated Bible school in Minneapolis.
He met Tammy Faye LaValley, a fellow student there, in 1960. Bakker was employed by the Minneapolis department store Young-restaurant. Quinlan’s Tammy Faye was employed by the Three Sisters, a local shop.
The Bakkers wed on April 1st, 1961, and later left school to work as traveling preachers. They have two children: Jamie Charles “Jay” Bakker, who was born on July 1, 1971, and Tammy Sue “Sissy” Bakker Chapman, who was born on March 2, 1970. (birthdate: 18 December 1975).
It ended on March 13, 1992. On September 4, 1998, Bakker married former televangelist Lori Beth Graham after they had been dating for fifty days. In 2002, they adopted five children.
Early career
Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker began their careers in 1966 at Portsmouth, Virginia’s Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), founded by Pat Robertson. In the low hundreds at the time, CBN had a modest audience. The Bakkers produced “Come on Over,” a children’s program that included humorous skits performed with puppets, and they aided the network’s expansion.
Come on Over’s success led Robertson to choose Bakker as host of The 700 Club, a brand-new prime-time discussion show that eventually became CBN’s most-watched program. After they departed from CBN in 1972, the Bakkers worked alongside Paul and Jan Crouch to launch the Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) in California the following year.
Nevertheless, the relationship between the two parties lasted only eight months until Jim Bakker and Paul Crouch got into a confrontation, which led to the Bakkers leaving the new network.
Jim Bakker is still alive and preaching about the end times
Jim Bakker was fired as a televangelist when Jessica Hahn, the church secretary, accused him of sexual assault. The third-largest theme park in the country at the time, Heritage USA, belonged to the Bakkers together with PTL.
Despite the Bakkers’ extravagant lifestyle and Tammy Faye’s shopping binges drawing criticism, millions of people watched the couple’s show. The sexual assault allegation, however, was difficult to refute.
Bakker stated that Jessica and he had a consensual sex act in a hotel room in Florida. Jim had given Hahn more than $350,000 in PTL cash as hush money, but Jessica finally revealed him. Jim left his employment at PTL as Jessica became famous overnight.
Inquiries into the Bakkers’ expenditures uncovered shocking financial irresponsibility. Jim was charged with 23 charges of fraud and one count of conspiracy in 1988. Jim’s attorneys lowered his 45-year sentenced to eight years throughout the appeal process.
Before divorcing Jim three years into his sentence, Faye originally supported Jim. Faye explained the divorce by writing, “For years, I have been pretending that everything is OK, but in reality, I suffer all the time. She subsequently acknowledged that the couple’s love had waned in her memoir, telling it My Way.
In 1994, Jim Bakker was released from prison and returned to ministry. But, he was unable to draw in the millions of people that eagerly await his every word on his talk show due to his stunning fall from fame and divorce from Faye.
Records by Bakker the Jim Bakker Show at Morningside, a Christian resort in Blue Eye, Missouri. Perhaps in part because of its apocalyptic theme, the show only draws a small portion of the audience that The PTL Club did.
Jim no longer preaches the prosperity gospel, most likely because he is too exhausted to do so. Jim’s gospel loses the vitality it had in the 1980s without Faye’s performance-like preaching. Jim mostly discusses the end times and challenges to the Christian faith.
According to BuzzFeed News, Bakker predicts that the end of the world will occur when two asteroids strike the planet. He stated that two distinct objects will strike Earth one after the other. When the asteroid crashes, there will be seven years of turmoil and conflict.
If you purchase the survival gear his ministry has prepared, he claims, you can make it through the seven years. With his congregation in decline and his health deteriorating, Jim is a shadow of the man he once was (he suffered a stroke in May 2021). Yet, he keeps on preaching, but with a message very different from the one that made him famous.
